Developing the internal grip for a custom cable entry? Email the cap section, cable outside diameter and insert drawing to amanda@tjswks.com. SWKS reviews PA66 cable gland locking inserts as individual molded components matched to the customer's gland assembly.

The Slotted Insert Inside the Gland

A locking insert occupies the space between the cable passage and the surrounding compression components. Its fingers move inward as the mating geometry acts on their outer surfaces. The continuous collar keeps those fingers connected and locates the insert in its seat. This page concerns that internal nylon cage, rather than a complete threaded cable gland or an external cable clamp.

The illustrated part has an open central passage, a lower collar and a series of separated axial fingers. The number of slots, finger length, mouth shape and outside taper are drawing-dependent. A custom insert must be considered together with the body, cap and any elastomeric sealing element that surrounds or sits within it. Components with a similar appearance may behave differently when fitted to another gland.

Begin with the Compression Path

Before selecting a finger thickness, establish how the cap moves and where it touches the insert. A tapered bearing surface can redirect axial movement into inward finger movement. The contact angle, available cap travel and starting clearance determine when the fingers engage. A section through the assembled gland is therefore more useful than an isolated outside diameter.

Identify the position at which the cap first contacts the insert and the intended final assembly position. The review should check whether the collar stays seated, whether the fingers close evenly and whether the slots still provide the required movement. A positive assembly stop, if used, must belong to the specified design; it should not be replaced by uncontrolled deformation of the fingers.

Match the Passage to the Actual Cable

Cable outside diameter is only one part of the fit. Jacket material, ovality, surface texture and dimensional variation can alter how the assembly grips. Provide the minimum and maximum cable diameters and, preferably, representative cable samples. For a soft jacket, a small local contact area may cause a different indentation pattern from a broad contact surface on a firm jacket.

The inner edges should allow the cable to pass without scraping or catching during installation. Finger tips, slot edges and the entrance radius deserve particular attention because they are close to the cable sheath. If internal ribs or teeth are requested, their profile and acceptable jacket marking need to be defined. Do not assume that sharper contact features automatically produce a better cable entry.

Separate Grip Development from Sealing Claims

A nylon locking cage can support the mechanical operation of a gland, while a separate sealing element may provide the cable-side seal. The roles depend on the complete construction. This component listing does not establish a waterproof rating, flame classification, electrical approval or pull-out value. Any required rating must be supported by the selected materials and verification of the finished assembly.

For development samples, agree on the cable specimen, tightening procedure and measurement conditions. Record how far the cable moves under the specified axial load, whether the jacket is damaged, and whether the insert changes position. If the project requires environmental sealing, evaluate that in the assembled gland with its intended seals and enclosure interface.

Interface to define Useful inquiry information
Compression cap Internal taper, contact length, travel and assembly stop
Insert seat Collar diameter, axial shoulder and retention clearance
Cable passage Diameter range, jacket type and permitted surface marking
Finger layout Slot count, free length, wall thickness and tip profile
Verification Assembly torque procedure, axial loading method and acceptance criteria

PA66 Grade, Moisture Condition and Finger Movement

The resin choice needs to suit a part that is expected to flex during installation. PA66 grades differ, and reinforcement can change the balance between stiffness and permitted deformation. Share the required service environment and assembly cycle count before confirming a material. A glass-filled grade should not be selected solely because greater rigidity sounds beneficial.

Polyamide moisture condition can influence dimensions and mechanical response. Specify whether dimensional inspection and assembly trials refer to dry-as-molded parts or a defined conditioned state. Sample approval is more informative when the part and the test method represent the intended storage and operating conditions. Color, stabilizers and any specified flame-retardant grade are reviewed separately; black color alone does not demonstrate weather resistance or an approval.

Molding the Slots and the Collar

Long narrow slots introduce tooling details that must remain practical for manufacture. The slot width, termination radius and finger root geometry are reviewed alongside the mold opening direction. A smooth transition at each slot end can be considered without changing the required closing movement. Avoid specifying an extremely thin finger root before the deflection and molding requirements have been reviewed together.

Gate and ejection locations should protect the cable contact area and the surfaces that bear against the cap. Flash across a slot can restrict movement; flash at the inner passage can interfere with cable insertion. The inspection plan can therefore include slot openness, inner-edge condition, collar seating and concentricity, in addition to basic diameters. Final tooling details follow the approved drawing and mold proposal.

Assembly Samples and Quotation

Trial the insert using the intended body, cap, seal and cable. Confirm that it can be seated in the correct direction, remains located while the cap is started and closes without an individual finger folding or escaping its seat. After disassembly, examine the slot roots and cable jacket and note whether the assembly is intended for one installation or repeated servicing.

For quotation, send the 3D model in STP, STEP or IGS format and a dimensioned section showing the mating parts. Include anticipated quantities, cable specifications, material requirements and the agreed sample checks. Contact amanda@tjswks.com or 0086-15222707659 to discuss a custom PA66 cable gland locking insert for your cable entry design.
