Need to move a rotary encoder mounting face away from the machine bracket? Send the encoder flange, shaft connection and mounting stack to amanda@tjswks.com. SWKS reviews custom POM rotary encoder spacer rings for drawing-based assemblies where the axial distance and locating interfaces need to be coordinated.

Establish the Encoder's Axial Mounting Position

A spacer ring occupies a defined distance between an encoder and its supporting plate. That distance may be needed to clear a shaft shoulder, provide space for a coupling or align the encoder body with another mounting feature. The ring's purpose is to establish the mechanical mounting stack; it does not generate, read or improve the encoder signal by itself.

The illustrated concept uses a flat annular flange, a central through opening, three fixing holes and a short concentric locating collar. The collar and hole pattern are starting features for a custom drawing rather than a universal encoder standard. Different encoder families can use different pilots, bolt circles and shaft arrangements, so the mating drawing is necessary before the dimensions can be confirmed.

Work Backward from the Shaft Connection

Begin with the required position of the encoder shaft relative to its mating shaft or coupling. Include the shaft shoulder, coupling length, engagement depth and the gap specified by the equipment design. Then determine the mounting-face separation needed to achieve that arrangement. Selecting a convenient ring thickness first can leave the coupling with insufficient engagement or limited assembly access.

The ring should not force the encoder into position by loading its shaft. Show whether the unit is a solid-shaft, hollow-shaft or another construction and identify the stationary supporting components. For a hollow-shaft encoder, a torque support may be part of the mounting concept. This ring is quoted against the approved arrangement; it is not assumed to replace a manufacturer's required support or alignment procedure.

Specify the Pilot as a Fit, Not Just a Diameter

A raised collar can locate in a counterbore, while the central opening provides clearance for a shaft, hub or projecting encoder feature. State which surfaces locate the assembly and which surfaces must remain free. A through bore intended only for clearance should not be treated as a precision bearing surface.

Provide the pilot diameter and depth together with the mating tolerance and entrance chamfer. Check that the collar does not bottom in the recess before the flat mounting faces meet. The root radius of the collar must also clear the edge of the mating counterbore. These small sectional details can determine whether the flange seats fully or appears tight while remaining slightly separated.

Control the Face-to-Face Distance in the Installed Stack

The important thickness is the distance between the actual contact faces after assembly. Identify those faces on the drawing and reference the other dimensions to them. If a raised feature, burr or gate trace sits on a contact area, the installed spacing may differ from the intended value even when the general ring thickness is correct.

Flatness and parallelism requirements should follow the alignment needs of the encoder mounting system. A ring that rocks on the plate can tilt the encoder when the screws are tightened. Explain the available supporting area on both sides and whether the machine bracket is machined, painted or otherwise finished. Surface requirements belong to the functional drawing rather than being inferred from a smooth product image.

Mounting detail Information needed for review
Axial stack Required face separation and mating shaft/coupling positions
Locating collar Pilot fit, recess depth, chamfer and root clearance
Central opening Maximum passing envelope and required radial clearance
Fixing pattern Bolt circle, hole size, fastener length and head access
Contact faces Supporting area, thickness tolerance and alignment requirements

Coordinate Fasteners and Tool Access

Adding a spacer changes the grip length of the fixing joint. Confirm the screw length, thread engagement and the location of any washers or inserts with the complete assembly. The clearance holes should align with the intended bolt circle without requiring the screws to pull the ring sideways into place. If the design uses slotted holes for adjustment, define their travel and the final locating method separately.

Access to the coupling screws and encoder fixings may be restricted after the ring is installed. Include the tool envelope in the layout review, especially when the ring creates a narrow gap behind the encoder body. An assembly that can be drawn in CAD still needs a practical tightening and removal sequence on the machine.

Select POM Against the Joint Conditions

The acetal grade is reviewed against service temperature, clamp loading, nearby lubricants and cleaning exposure. The ring may be stationary in normal use, so the important material requirements can differ from those of a sliding wear component. Natural white and other color options can be discussed, but material identity and any qualification requirements need to be explicit.

Plastic joints also require consideration of sustained loading and thermal dimensional changes. Installation torque and the supporting footprint should be evaluated with the selected grade and the actual fasteners. If a compression limiter, metal insert or secondary machining operation is required, show it in the design so it can be included in the quotation and inspection plan.

Molded Geometry and Drawing-Specific Inspection

A continuous annulus with a raised collar has different section thicknesses near the pilot and screw holes. Tooling review considers those transitions along with gate position, draft and ejection. Mark the two seating faces and the locating diameter as functional areas. Cosmetic surfaces can then be separated from the features that establish spacing and fit.

Some assemblies may require finishing of a face or bore after molding. That requirement is reviewed from the specified tolerances and quantity rather than assumed for every part. The agreed inspection method should show how thickness, collar fit and hole position are measured from the chosen datums.

Approve the Ring in the Encoder Assembly

Fit samples with the intended bracket, encoder, coupling and screws. Check full face seating, free passage through the center and access for tightening. Confirm the encoder position using the equipment manufacturer's alignment procedure. Operate the assembled system under the agreed conditions and investigate any rubbing or unintended shaft loading before approving the mounting stack.

For a quotation, provide STP, STEP or IGS data, a dimensioned section, anticipated quantities and any material or inspection requirements. Include the encoder mounting drawing and coupling envelope where available. Email amanda@tjswks.com or contact 0086-15222707659 to discuss your custom POM rotary encoder spacer ring.
