Replaceable POM Contact Strips for Conveyor Side Guidance

On a conveyor side rail, the product repeatedly touches the same narrow band. A replaceable polymer strip can put a dedicated wear surface at that contact line while leaving the supporting rail in place. SWKS offers custom POM conveyor side guide wear strips as drawing-defined molded segments for equipment builders and conveyor maintenance projects.

The illustrated segment is an elongated white acetal bar with a smooth broad contact face, rounded edges and recessed fixing holes. It presents a sliding contact surface beside the conveyed product. The design concept is supplied to explain the custom manufacturing scope; length, section, fixing pattern and resin grade follow the approved project drawing.

Locate the Contact Band Before Defining the Section

The useful wear surface depends on what moves along the conveyor. A carton edge, rigid tray and bottle wall may contact the guide at different heights and with different local pressures. Please identify the conveyed item, its material, dimensions, weight and the height of the side contact. Photos of existing wear marks can help show whether the product touches the full strip or only a narrow line.

Guide spacing should be considered with product variation and the intended movement. Excessive constraint can create rubbing or jams, while too much clearance may allow unstable tracking. Include accumulation areas, transfers and changes in direction where side loading differs from a straight, freely moving section. The strip drawing should describe the required interface; operating clearance is confirmed within the conveyor assembly.

Recessed Fixings Keep Hardware Away from the Product

When a fixing passes through the contact face, its head must remain below the usable surface. Counterbore depth therefore needs to be checked against the actual fastener head, washer arrangement and permitted wear allowance. A recess that is adequate on a new strip may expose hardware after the contact surface has worn. Define when the segment should be replaced rather than relying only on its original overall thickness.

The supporting rail also controls the installed shape. Provide its drawing, hole positions and flatness requirements so the polymer segment can seat without being forced into alignment. Tightening should follow an agreed assembly procedure. The fixing system must account for the chosen material, temperature range and movement allowance; a long polymer segment should not be constrained by an assumed metal-to-metal fixing practice.

Segment Joints, Leading Edges and Replacement Access

A sequence of short molded strips allows the contact path to be divided into serviceable sections. Joint design needs attention because a proud edge can catch a carton or concentrate contact on the next segment. Identify the product travel direction and agree any lead-in radius, end relief or joint gap with the equipment designer.

For replacement work, include the space available to remove fasteners and withdraw a worn segment. A strip that fits the rail may still be difficult to service if a nearby frame member blocks the tool. Where several segment lengths share a line, part identification and packing separation can help maintenance staff select the correct replacement without altering the mounting pattern.

Customization Details for the Quotation

Design area Information to provide
Sliding face Contact height, face width, edge radii and acceptable surface condition
Segment envelope Length, height, thickness and installed space on the supporting rail
Fastener recesses Actual screw head and washer sizes, recess depth and replacement criterion
Rail attachment Hole spacing, backing surface, locating method and assembly access
Adjacent segments Travel direction, end geometry, joint clearance and transition requirements
POM specification Selected resin grade, color and any application-specific documentation
Production input STP, STEP or IGS model, dimensioned drawing, trial quantity and repeat demand

Select POM Against the Actual Sliding Pair

POM is a material option for molded sliding and wear components, but a material family name does not define service life. The counterface, side force, conveyor speed, duty cycle, dust and lubrication condition all affect the contact. Provide the operating conditions and any known failure mode of the existing strip so the grade and geometry review addresses the application.

Where cleaning is frequent, identify the cleaning agents, concentration, temperature and exposure time. If the guide contacts food or requires a particular material declaration, state that requirement before quotation. White color does not establish food-contact compliance, and no regulatory approval or operating rating is implied by the concept images. The required documents must relate to the selected grade and agreed supply.

Molded Segment Development

This page concerns custom injection molded segments. Overall length, wall section and expected order volume are reviewed before a tooling proposal is confirmed. An unusually long continuous profile may need a different manufacturing assessment; it should not be assumed to have the same tooling scope as a compact repeat segment.

For a slender molded part, straightness and the relationship between the contact face and the mounting face deserve specific attention. The tooling review considers filling, shrinkage, gate location and ejection together with the selected POM grade. Mark the contact band and fixing seats as functional areas so molding traces and dimensional allowances can be assessed where they matter.

Confirm Performance with a Representative Conveyor Trial

  1. Inspect the strip section, fixing pattern and recess depths against the approved drawing.
  2. Fit representative segments to the intended rail without forcing the mounting holes into position.
  3. Run the actual conveyed items through straight sections, joints and transfers under agreed operating conditions.
  4. Check for catching, product marking, uneven contact and exposed fixing hardware.
  5. Record wear observations and agree the replacement criterion before repeat production approval.

Wear rate, friction, allowable loading and maximum speed are application results to be established by the responsible equipment team. A trial using representative products and the intended rail arrangement gives more useful acceptance evidence than an unsupported general service-life claim.

Request Your Custom Wear Strip

Please send the strip drawing, supporting rail details, conveyed product information, operating environment and quantity. For an existing line, include photos of the installed guide and the worn contact surface. Tooling cost, minimum order quantity, sample arrangements and production timing will be confirmed after the segment design and inspection requirements are clear.
