A contact paddle for controlled stopping and release
A stop gate enters a conveying path at a defined point, holds an item in position and withdraws to allow release. This custom molded POM component is the contact paddle within that mechanism. Its blade, pivot tab and rear supports are developed from the machine layout. The actuator, pivot pin, bracket, controls and guarding belong to the surrounding equipment and are outside the part supply unless separately agreed.
The illustrated design has a broad contact face above a compact pivot interface. Its function is intermittent interception, rather than continuous chain or rail guidance. The exact outline is customized for the carton, carrier, tray or other item being handled; the illustration does not define a standard size or a permissible stopping load.
Start with the item at the stopping position
Identify where the paddle may touch the conveyed item. A carton edge, rigid carrier and open tray present different contact geometry. Supply the item's height range, leading-edge shape and tolerance, together with the intended stopped position. The blade width and upper outline can then be reviewed against that contact zone.
Include the distance from the pivot axis to the contact point. This relationship affects the mechanism's motion and the forces transferred through the lower tab. Also show the cleared position: after withdrawal, the paddle must fit within the envelope defined by the equipment designer.
Coordinate the pivot and actuator interfaces
The lower bore is a functional interface with the customer's pivot arrangement. Define its diameter, length, datum and agreed fit with the mating pin. Clarify how the part is retained axially and whether a separate bush or washer is required. These details should appear on the assembly drawing rather than being inferred from a photograph.
Where an actuator pushes the rear of the paddle, identify the actual contact or linkage location. The stop position and travel limit must be supplied by the mechanism designer. The molded blade should not be assumed to absorb an undefined actuator overtravel or uncontrolled impact.

Review the molded shape before releasing tooling
A relatively even blade section, rounded transitions and appropriately proportioned rear ribs provide a practical starting point for a molding discussion. The pivot bore may require a transverse core, depending on the chosen parting direction. Tool access, release direction and the pin-interface tolerance are reviewed before the geometry is approved.
Mark the item-contacting face as a functional surface. Gate and ejector locations should be discussed so that molding traces do not interfere with the agreed contact zone or pivot seating. If the model contains thick intersections, the proposed wall layout can be reviewed with the customer before mold construction.
Provide the stopping conditions with the enquiry
Item mass alone is insufficient to specify a stop paddle. Describe the approach speed, accumulation arrangement, cycle frequency, contact duration and how the upstream conveyor behaves while an item is held. Include the operating temperature and exposure to cleaners, oils or process liquids. The exact POM grade must be selected against those conditions.
Requirements for impact, wear, surface marking or dimensional stability should be written into the project review. No stopping-force limit, lifetime, food-contact approval or completed test result is claimed for the illustrated configuration. This component is not offered as a personnel-protection interlock.
Agree on the sample check around the mechanism
- Check pivot-axis location and the agreed pin fit.
- Confirm contact height with representative conveyed items.
- Review the fully withdrawn position and adjacent clearances.
